The city’s strong commitment to its past is evidenced by Chestnut Square, a full block of restored tum-of-the-century homes managed by McKinney's Heritage Guild and the Christmas Tour of Homes during which other historic homes around town are open to visitors. The Downtown Square is the site for several of McKinney's annual celebrations. Mayfair, the third weekend in May, celebrates spring while Harvestfest, the first weekend in October, welcomes the fall harvest season. Entertainment for the entire family, arts and crafts, a variety of food vendors and displays by local merchants highlight these celebrations of McMinney's heritage. Tours are available through the Old Court House, the Old Post Office Museum and Chestnut Square.   The Forever Free Celebration, held annually the Saturday preceding July 4, presents a Patriotic Tribute to the veterans of military service who have served our county past and present as well as celebrating the American family and our nation's independence. This family event held at Stonebridge Ranch features military flyovers and displays, hot air balloons, concessions, children's activities, a concert, chili cook-off, car show and the largest fireworks display in the Collin County area. Fast improvements to the McKinney Municipal Airport have enhanced future growth; the airport now features a 7,000 ft runway and instrument landing system, making the airport attractive to corporate jets.
Be sure to visit the first weekend after Thanksgiving. The downtown McKinney Association presents "A Dickens of a Christmas," a celebration of McKinney's Victorian period. Windows are decorated in a seasonal theme and merchants are garbed in costumes of Dickens' London. Yet despite the emphasis on its past, McKinney is a fully participating partner in the growing Dallas Metroplex. In fact, Collin County is the second fastest growing county in the country. | |
